Guatemalan passports are issued by the Guatemalan Migration Institute and processed abroad through the consular network, which covers the United States with 26 consulates plus mobile consular days. Your immigration status in the United States has no bearing on the procedure: the passport is a document of the Guatemalan state issued to its nationals.
Quick facts
Since August 2025 the network works on a walk-in basis for basic documentation at almost every consulate, with only the busiest offices keeping compulsory appointments. Confirm with your own consulate before travelling to it, because the model has been changing.
Fees breakdown
| Document | Cost | Payment |
|---|---|---|
| Passport, 5 years of validity | $65 USD | Money order |
| Passport, 10 years of validity | $100 USD | Money order |
| DPI identity document | $15 USD | Money order |
| Consular identification card | $25 USD | Money order |
| RENAP birth certification issued at the consulate | $6 USD | Money order |
Most consulates take money orders only, made out for the exact amount to that specific consulate. Cash and cards are refused at many offices, and a money order written to the wrong payee is the most common reason a file is sent back.
How to renew
- Find your CUI, the unique identification code printed on your DPI or on a RENAP birth certification. If you do not have it, the consular system can generate it and send it to your email.
- Check whether your consulate is taking walk-ins or still requires an appointment through the MINEX portal.
- Complete and print the passport application, marking whether it is a first issue or a renewal and which validity you want.
- Buy a money order for the exact fee, payable to your consulate.
- Attend with your DPI or RENAP certification, your previous passport and proof of your U.S. address dated within the last 90 days.
- Have your photograph and fingerprints taken, then collect the passport or receive it by mail depending on the consulate.
Required documents
- Valid DPI in good condition, original and a copy of both sides on a single page.
- If you have no DPI, a RENAP birth certification showing your CUI, issued within the last six months.
- Previous passport, even if expired, plus a photocopy of the data page.
- Proof of current U.S. address dated within the last 90 days: utility bill, lease or bank statement.
- Money order for the exact amount.
- For minors: both parents with ID, the child’s birth certificate, and a passport authorisation issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when one parent is in Guatemala.
Where to renew
Consulates serve the states in their district, and mobile consular days reach cities with no permanent office. Dates are published by each consulate rather than centrally, so check its channels before planning a trip.

Expired DPI
An expired DPI blocks most consular files. Renewing the DPI costs $15 and is done at the same window, but it needs a current RENAP birth certification, so order that first.
Minors
Both parents normally have to appear. When one parent is in Guatemala, the authorisation has to come from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, not from a private notary in the United States.
Lost or stolen passports
Report the loss to the local police, keep the report, and take it to the consulate with your DPI. Replacement is treated as a new issue, at the same fee.
Mobile consulates and consular Saturdays
The Guatemala sobre ruedas days and the monthly consular Saturdays offer the same documentation services as the fixed offices, which matters if the nearest consulate is several states away.
