Guatemala keeps its civil registry centrally, at the National Registry of Persons. Consulates do not hold the register themselves: they receive the file, forward it through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the inscription is made in Guatemala. Once a record exists there, a consulate can issue the certification for $6.
Quick facts
An event that happened in the United States — a birth, a marriage, a death — produces no legal effect in Guatemala until it is inscribed. Unregistered marriages are the classic problem: no matrimonial property regime, no inheritance rights for the spouse, no joint registration of children.
Fees breakdown
| Service | Cost | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Registration of a birth, marriage or death abroad | Free | Consulate |
| Certification of a registry record | $6 USD | Consulate |
| Apostille of the U.S. certificate | $3–$25 | Secretary of State |
| Certified translation, where required | $25–$75 per page | Sworn translator |
| Notarial route in Guatemala | Notary’s fees | Guatemalan notary |
The registration itself carries no government charge at any stage. What costs money is the paperwork around it: the apostille, sometimes a translation, and the certifications you will need afterwards.
How to file
- Order the long-form U.S. certificate of the event from the state vital records office or county clerk, and ask for two or three copies.
- Have it apostilled by the Secretary of State of the issuing state.
- Call the consulate before paying for a translation. Some accept English-language U.S. records, others require a certified Spanish translation.
- Present the file at the consulate whose district covers the place where the event occurred.
- Wait for the inscription to be completed in Guatemala, which usually takes three to four months.
- Request the certification once the record exists, at the consulate or directly in Guatemala.
Required documents
- Long-form U.S. certificate, apostilled, original plus two copies.
- Valid DPI or Guatemalan passport of the Guatemalan party. An expired document stops the file.
- Registry certifications of the Guatemalan parties, issued within the last six months, when both parties are Guatemalan.
- Photo ID of everyone appearing.
- Parents’ marriage certificate for a birth registration, where it applies.
- Completed registry form supplied by the consulate.
Where to file
Jurisdiction follows the place of the event, not your current address, so a family that has moved states may have to file with a different consulate from the one nearest home.

Consular route or notarial route
Marriages and other acts can also be inscribed through a Guatemalan notary who protocolises the apostilled certificate. That route is faster and more expensive; the consular route is slower and free.
Why marriage registration matters
It governs succession, joint property purchases, the civil status shown on the DPI, joint registration of children born in the United States and a spouse’s access to social security benefits.
Deaths abroad
A death registered with the consulate allows the family to settle inheritance, pensions and bank accounts in Guatemala. The U.S. death certificate has to be apostilled in the same way.
Errors in the record
Mistakes in the underlying U.S. certificate have to be corrected with the U.S. issuing office before the file is submitted. Correcting an inscription afterwards is a separate registry procedure in Guatemala.
