Under Article 144 of the Guatemalan Constitution, a child born abroad to a Guatemalan father or mother is Guatemalan by birth. Registering that child at a consulate is not a naturalisation: it records citizenship that already exists. The procedure is free at every stage, and neither Guatemala nor the United States asks anyone to give up the other nationality.
Quick facts
One requirement catches families out: for a minor, both parents must appear in person with the child. It cannot be done by a third party or through a power of attorney. If one parent has died, the death certificate replaces their appearance.
Fees breakdown
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Consular registration of a birth abroad | Free | No charge at the consulate, ministry or registry |
| Apostille of the U.S. birth certificate | $3–$25 | Secretary of State |
| Certified translation, if the consulate asks for one | $25–$75 per page | Sworn translator |
| Registry certification once inscribed | $6 USD | Consulate |
| Guatemalan passport afterwards | $65 or $100 | 5 or 10 years |
| DPI from age 18 | $15 USD | Consulate |
Nobody should be paying a fixer for this. The only unavoidable cost is the apostille charged by the U.S. state that issued the birth certificate.
How to register
- Confirm that the Guatemalan parent holds a current DPI or passport. An expired document is the single most common cause of rejection.
- Order the long-form U.S. birth certificate from the state vital records office.
- Have it apostilled by the Secretary of State of that state.
- Ask the consulate whether a certified Spanish translation is needed; practice varies between offices.
- Attend with both parents and the child, carrying originals and two copies of everything.
- The consulate forwards the file for inscription, and the registry assigns a unique identification code, the CUI, once the record is created.
Required documents
- Child’s long-form U.S. birth certificate, apostilled, original plus two copies.
- Valid DPI or Guatemalan passport of the Guatemalan parent.
- Identity documents of both parents, whatever their nationality.
- Registry certification of the Guatemalan parent, issued within the last six months, where the consulate requires it — and for both parents when both are Guatemalan.
- Parents’ marriage certificate when they are married.
- Death certificate of a parent who cannot appear.
Where to register
File with the consulate covering the U.S. state where the birth took place. Mobile consular days handle these registrations too.

What the registration unlocks
A Guatemalan passport, inheritance on the same footing as any citizen, the right to own land in the coastal and border strips where foreign ownership is restricted, voting from abroad in presidential elections, and national-rate tuition at public schools and universities.
Adults born in the United States
There is no age limit. The file is the same, though adults are usually asked for their own photo ID and may need their Guatemalan parent’s registry certification to prove the link.
Naturalised U.S. citizens
A Guatemalan who becomes a U.S. citizen keeps Guatemalan nationality and can renew a passport at any consulate. Article 145 also allows nationals of the other Central American republics to acquire Guatemalan nationality without renouncing their own.
After the inscription
The CUI opens the rest: passport, DPI at eighteen, registration of a foreign marriage, and joint registration of any further children born in the United States.
