Before booking anything, check one thing: whether you can renew online. Jamaica allows online renewal only for adult passports issued after September 2001 that have expired or expire within a year. If yours qualifies, the process is faster and you never see a consulate. If it does not — a handwritten blue book, a child’s passport, a name change — you go through a mission.
Quick facts
The form itself carries a requirement that surprises people: Section G must be certified by a notary public, an attorney-at-law, a medical doctor, a minister of religion authorised to perform marriages, or a consular officer. And one of the two photographs must be certified by that same person.
Fees breakdown
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Application fee (Washington) | $95 | Plus consular and postage fee |
| Consular and postage fee (Washington) | $20 | Charged separately |
| Adult renewal or first passport (Miami) | $130 | Money order only |
| Replacement with over 12 months left | $200 | Renewing early is expensive |
| Payment method | Money order or cashier’s check | Personal checks are never accepted |
Fees differ between posts, which is unusual. Confirm the exact figure with the mission that covers you before buying the money order, and note the $200 charge for replacing a passport that still has more than twelve months to run.
How to renew
- Check your eligibility for online renewal on the agency’s site before anything else.
- If you do not qualify, obtain the application form and complete it.
- Have Section G certified by one of the authorised officials, and one photograph certified by the same person.
- Assemble the documents in original form: laminated, photocopied and scanned documents are refused.
- Book the appointment for the specific service, or use the drop-box or mail route where offered.
- Pay by money order and allow ten to fourteen weeks for production in Kingston.
Required documents
- Completed application form with Section G certified.
- Current or most recent passport.
- Birth certificate, adoption certificate or Jamaican citizenship certificate.
- Two identical photographs to the published chart, one certified.
- Valid government photo identification, or a Declaration of Identity if you have none.
- Proof of any name change: marriage certificate, deed poll, divorce decree or court order.

Born in Jamaica, living in the U.S.
Applicants born in Jamaica are asked for a signed statement describing how they entered the United States: the document and name used, the approximate landing date, and any other relevant detail. It catches people unprepared.
Electronic passports
Jamaica moved to electronic passports with an embedded chip in March 2023, with 48 pages. Older books remain valid until their printed expiry.
No laminated documents
This is enforced. A laminated birth certificate will be refused, and replacing one takes time.
Follow up directly
Once the file is in Kingston, the agency operates its own helpdesk for status enquiries, which is faster than going back through the mission.
