One scheduling detail governs this entire subject: at the missions, apostille and document certification are offered on Tuesdays and Fridays only. There is a dedicated appointment form for it, and turning up on another day with documents in hand achieves nothing.

U.S. documentsState apostille first

For a U.S. public document going to Jamaica, the first step is the apostille from the Secretary of State of the issuing state. Whether anything further is needed depends on the office receiving it, and asking them first is the only way to be sure.

Academic and professional documents are the most commonly certified, usually for employment or for a licensing body on one side or the other.

How to prepare a document

  1. Ask the receiving office in Jamaica exactly what certification it requires.
  2. Order a certified copy from the issuing authority, or have the private document notarised.
  3. Send it for the apostille from the relevant Secretary of State.
  4. Book the mission’s document certification appointment if a consular step is also needed.
  5. Attend on a Tuesday or a Friday with the originals.
  6. Keep the chain together and order a spare set.

Required documents

What the missions do

They take passport and visa applications, issue emergency travel certificates, process citizenship applications, certify documents, and assist Jamaicans in difficulty.

Additional notes

Jamaican civil documents

Birth, marriage and death certificates come from the Registrar General’s Department in Jamaica, and certification of them is arranged there rather than here.

Two days a week is the constraint

Plan the whole chain around it. Missing a Friday can cost a week when a deadline is close.

Never certify a photocopy

Certification attaches to an original or a properly certified copy, and laminated documents are refused throughout the Jamaican system.

Order two copies

Offices retain what they receive. A spare saves repeating a chain that only runs twice a week.
