Honduran Dual Citizenship in the U.S. โ€” 2026 Guide

Checked September 2026. This page was written for this country and its details were checked against the authorityโ€™s own sources that month. Consular rules still change without notice, so confirm anything that will cost you a journey or a fee with the office that covers you. How we check our data.
Data last verified: September 2026

A child born in the United States to a Honduran father or mother is Honduran by descent, and the consular network is where that status is turned into documents: a certification in the national registry, then an identity card and a passport.

Quick facts

Fee$25 for the certification
ProcessingDays to weeks
AppointmentThrough the official system
FormCivil registry certification

Hondurans who naturalise as U.S. citizens do not thereby lose their nationality of origin, which is why passport renewal for dual nationals is routine work across the network.

Each step has its own appointment, so plan for more than one visit rather than trying to do everything at once.

How to register a child

  1. Order the U.S. birth certificate naming both parents.
  2. Check with the consulate whether an apostille and translation are needed for your case.
  3. Book the appointment for the civil registry certification.
  4. Attend with the parents’ current identity documents and the original certificate.
  5. Pay the tariff and obtain the Honduran record.
  6. Apply for the child’s identity document and passport afterwards.

Required documents

Where to register

At the consulate covering your area, or at a mobile consular day serving your city.

Additional notes

What it unlocks

A Honduran passport, the national identity card, inheritance and property rights, and the ability to register the next generation in turn.

Parents’ documents must be current

An expired identity card on the parent’s side is the most common reason a child’s file is stopped. Renew it first.

Marriages and divorces

Marriages and divorces that happened in the United States are certified through the same $25 service, which keeps the Honduran record accurate.

Keep copies

Later procedures ask for recently issued copies, so request more than one when the record is created.
