Document authentication between the United States and Ghana is an area where you should ask the receiving institution first. Ghana has traditionally used consular legalisation rather than the apostille, and its position has been evolving, so the route that will be accepted depends on who receives the document and when.
Quick facts
Whichever route applies, the first steps are the same: a certified copy, a notarisation where the document is private, and certification by the Secretary of State of the issuing state.
Fees breakdown
| Item | Cost | Issued by |
|---|---|---|
| State certification or apostille | $3–$25 per document | Secretary of State of that state |
| Federal certification | $20 per document | U.S. Department of State |
| Consular legalisation | Consular tariff | Ghanaian mission |
| Authentication in Ghana | Charged there | Foreign ministry |
| Notarisation before certification | $5–$25 per signature | U.S. notary public |
Academic documents are the most commonly authenticated, and Ghanaian institutions often verify them with the awarding body as well.
How to prepare a document
- Ask the Ghanaian institution exactly which certification it accepts.
- Order a certified copy, or have the private document notarised.
- Obtain the certification from the Secretary of State of the issuing state.
- Add the federal certification where the chain requires it.
- Book the consular appointment if legalisation is needed.
- Keep the chain together and order a spare set.
Required documents
- Original certified copy with signature and seal.
- Completed authentication request and payment.
- Photo identification.
- Prepaid return envelope for mail filings.
What the missions do
They handle visas, passport matters, the dual citizenship certificate, authentication of documents, powers of attorney and assistance to Ghanaians in difficulty.
Additional notes
Confirm before you pay
Because the framework has been in transition, guidance written a couple of years ago may describe a route that no longer applies, or one that does.
Ghanaian documents going the other way
Documents issued in Ghana are authenticated there by the foreign ministry before they carry weight abroad.
Birth certificates
Ghana’s civil registry has been modernised over time, and older certificates sometimes need re-registration before they are accepted.
Order two copies
Offices retain what they receive, and repeating the chain from abroad is slow.
