Ghana permits dual citizenship, but it is not automatic paperwork: a Ghanaian who acquires another nationality is expected to hold a dual citizenship certificate, and the missions ask for it as evidence of status in passport and other files.
Quick facts
There is a second development worth knowing. On 2 February 2026 Ghana suspended its citizenship application process for people of African descent, the route that had drawn attention across the diaspora, saying it intended to make the system more accessible and easier to use.
The routes
| Situation | Position | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Ghanaian who naturalises in the U.S. | May keep Ghanaian citizenship | Obtain the dual citizenship certificate |
| Child born in the U.S. to a Ghanaian parent | Ghanaian by descent | Document it, then passport and card |
| Person of African descent with no Ghanaian ancestry | Route suspended since February 2026 | Check the current position |
| Right of abode | A separate status | Not the same as citizenship |
The right of abode and citizenship are commonly confused. The first permits residence and work indefinitely; the second carries a passport and the vote.

Additional notes
Get the certificate before you need it
Applicants regularly discover it is required when they turn up for a passport. Obtaining it first avoids repeating the trip.
The diaspora route is in flux
Because the process was suspended during 2026 for redesign, anything written before then may describe a system that is not currently open. Verify before paying anyone.
Children born here
They are U.S. citizens by birth and Ghanaian through a parent. Documenting the Ghanaian side early keeps both open.
Public office
Some public positions in Ghana are restricted to citizens holding no other nationality. Take advice if that matters to you.
