At $36 for an adult renewal, this is the cheapest passport in the entire directory. And Uruguay is generous about documents too: it accepts your previous passport or your identity card even if both are expired, and if you hold neither, the consulates run a special procedure rather than turning you away.

Being able to renew up to a year before expiry is worth using, because appointment availability rather than processing is usually what delays people.

How to renew

  1. Book the appointment with the consulate covering your area.
  2. Bring your previous passport or identity card, expired or not.
  3. If you were born in the interior of the country, bring your birth certificate.
  4. For a lost or stolen passport, bring the local police report.
  5. Attend for photograph, signature and fingerprints.
  6. To have it posted, bring a tracked priority envelope with stamps on the day.

Required documents

Where to apply

At the embassy in Washington or the consulates general. Uruguay maintains a reasonable network for a small country, and each post publishes its own requirements.

Additional notes

The first passport costs double

A first passport as a natural citizen is $72 and needs a Uruguayan birth certificate issued no more than 30 days beforehand. The consulates will request one for you if you email them 20 days in advance, which is the detail that makes this workable.

Minors

Both parents must attend with documents proving parentage, and the child must be there too with valid identification. Where a parent cannot attend, a minor’s permit is required.

If you have no documents at all

There is a dedicated procedure for that situation. Contact the consulate rather than assuming you are stuck.

Criminal record checks

Some procedures call for an FBI record apostilled by the U.S. Department of State. Ask whether yours does before booking, since that stage takes weeks.
