Uruguay assigns registration jurisdiction by where the person was born, not where the family lives. The Miami consulate, for instance, registers only people born in a defined list of states and territories. Living in one state and being born in another means dealing with a different post.

Quick facts

JurisdictionBy state of birth
Birth registration$18 plus translation
WitnessesTwo, for a minor
Death registration$14, two declarants

The parent who transmits the right to Uruguayan nationality must present a Uruguayan passport or identity card, and the consulates say without exception. A foreign document will not substitute for it, however clear the family relationship.

What each procedure needs

ProcedureCostKey requirement
Birth registration$18Apostilled certificate, plus translation
Translation at the consulate$54 per pageUp to five pages
Registering a minor$18Uruguayan parent plus two witnesses
Death registration$14Two declarants with identification
Grandchild registration$18Grandparent’s Uruguayan certificate too

For a death, the two declarants may be of any nationality, and a foreign driving licence is accepted as their identification. Their names, addresses, dates of birth, sex, marital status, nationality and profession all have to be recorded.

How to file

  1. Identify the consulate whose jurisdiction covers the state of birth.
  2. Order the U.S. certificate and have it apostilled.
  3. Email the post the completed form and scanned documents where that route is offered.
  4. Arrange the translation, by a public translator in Uruguay or at the consulate.
  5. For a minor, arrange the Uruguayan parent’s attendance and two witnesses.
  6. Attend the appointment and pay the fee.

Required documents

Where to file

At the consulate whose jurisdiction covers the state where the person was born.

Additional notes

Check jurisdiction by birthplace

This is the error that sends families to the wrong consulate. Residence does not decide it.

The transmitting parent’s document

If their Uruguayan passport and identity card have both lapsed beyond use, sort that out first: the registration cannot proceed without one.

Two witnesses for a minor

Arrange them before booking. They must attend on the day.

Email first

Several posts take the scanned file by email before the appointment, which catches problems before you travel.
