U.S. citizens travel to Spain without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Consular visa work in the United States is therefore about two things: short-stay visas for third-country nationals living here, and the national long-stay visas that Americans need in order to study, work, retire or relocate.
Quick facts
National visa fees are set by reciprocity rather than by a single European rate, so the amount U.S. citizens pay differs from the general figure. Confirm it with the office handling your file.
Fees breakdown
| Item | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Schengen short-stay visa, adult | €90 | €45 for ages 6 to 12, free below 6 |
| National long-stay visa | Set by reciprocity | Differs by nationality |
| Visa centre service charge | Charged separately | Where intake is outsourced |
| Apostille of supporting documents | $3–$25 per document | Secretary of State |
| Sworn translation into Spanish | Per page | By a translator Spain recognises |
| Travel medical insurance | Minimum €30,000 of cover | Short-stay requirement |
For every national category the documentary burden is heavier than the fee: background checks, medical certificates, proof of income and health cover, all apostilled and translated.
How to apply
- Identify the category. Non-lucrative residence, student, digital nomad and work routes each have their own file.
- Apply to the consulate covering your U.S. address, and to Spain only if it is your main destination for a short stay.
- Order the criminal background check early, since it has to be apostilled and often has a short shelf life.
- Arrange sworn translations of everything not in Spanish.
- Attend the appointment in person with originals and copies, and give biometrics.
- Collect the passport with the visa, then complete the residence card formalities in Spain within the deadline.
Required documents
- Passport valid for the whole stay, with blank pages.
- Completed application for the category, signed.
- Photographs to the published specification.
- Criminal background check, apostilled and translated, for long-stay categories.
- Private health insurance valid in Spain, or evidence of public cover.
- Proof of income, enrolment, employment or business activity by category.
Where to apply
Files go to the consulate whose district covers your U.S. address. Applying outside your district is refused.

The 90/180 rule
Days spent anywhere in the Schengen area count towards the same allowance, and border systems now track it automatically.
Get the identification number early
The foreigner identification number can be requested at a consulate before departure, and almost every administrative or financial step in Spain depends on having one.
Documents go stale
Background checks and medical certificates are usually accepted only within a few months of issue. Sequencing them correctly avoids paying twice.
After arrival
Most national visas require registering and applying for a residence card in Spain within a set period. Missing that deadline undoes the consular work.
