Data last verified: September 2026 — U.S. travel advice for Russia has been at its most severe level. Read the current advisory in full.

Americans need a visa for Russia, applied for through the Russian consular offices here. But the decisive issue for anyone considering the trip is not the visa: it is that the United States has warned its citizens against travel to Russia and that its ability to assist them there is severely constrained.

The U.S. consulates general in Vladivostok and Yekaterinburg remain suspended because of staffing, so an American in difficulty outside Moscow has a long way to go for help.

Where to apply

At the Russian consular office covering your state.

Additional notes

A visa in a U.S. passport may not be possible

Americans who once held Russian citizenship are often required to renounce it formally before a Russian visa will be placed in their U.S. passport. That is covered on the citizenship page and it is not a formality.

Renunciation must be formal

Unless Russian citizenship has been renounced through a Russian embassy or consulate, the person risks being unable to leave Russia on any document other than a Russian passport.

It can affect emergency help

Being treated as a Russian citizen can also interfere with access to U.S. consular services in an emergency.

Check insurance wording

Many policies have excluded Russia entirely. Read the exclusions rather than the summary page.
