Portuguese consulates keep a genuine civil registry function, and the range is wider than most: births, marriages and deaths abroad, but also acknowledgement of paternity, divorce, changes of name and of sex. One item stands out in the fee table: registering a death that occurred abroad is free.

That a family dealing with a death abroad is not charged for the registration is the kind of detail nobody thinks to look up, and it matters at the worst possible moment.

Registering a child’s birth is not merely administrative: it is how Portuguese nationality is attributed to a child born abroad, which is why the consulates file it under nationality as well as civil registry.

How to file

  1. Order the U.S. certificate in original form with the raised seal.
  2. Apostille it only if it was issued outside the United States.
  3. Book the appointment online for the specific registry service.
  4. Bring both parents’ documents: citizen card, or passport where one is foreign.
  5. Include the parents’ marriage certificate if the marriage is not yet transcribed in Portugal.
  6. Complete the nationality application form where the registration concerns a child.

Additional notes

Transcribe the marriage

A marriage celebrated in the United States has no effect in Portugal until it is registered there, and its absence blocks other files, including a child’s.

Acknowledgement of paternity

Consulates handle declarations of paternity, which matter for a child’s nationality where the parents are not married.

Divorce

Divorces obtained in the United States generally need to be recognised and registered in Portugal before civil status there changes.

Keep several copies

Portuguese procedures ask for recent certificates repeatedly. Order more than one when the record is created.
