Mexican Passport Renewal in the U.S. — 2026 Guide

Two things are worth knowing before anything else. Your immigration status in the United States is irrelevant — the passport is issued by the Mexican government to its own citizens, and consulates do not ask. And there is no penalty for renewing a passport that expired years ago: the process is the same as an ordinary renewal.

Appointments are booked through the ministry’s current system, online or by WhatsApp. The old telephone service that ran on toll-free numbers no longer operates, which is worth knowing because plenty of guidance still lists those numbers.

Fees breakdown

The 50% discount from age 60 applies to every validity and is one of the more generous concessions in this directory. It covers the passport only, not the other consular services.

How to renew

1. Book the appointment through the official system, online or by WhatsApp. It is free.
2. Check that your certified population registry code is current, since the biometric passport requires it.
3. Gather proof of nationality, photo identification and proof of your U.S. address.
4. Bring originals and a copy of each.
5. Attend for the digital photograph, electronic signature and fingerprints.
6. Pay in cash or by card, depending on what your consulate accepts.

Required documents

• Proof of Mexican nationality: certified Mexican birth certificate, nationality certificate, naturalisation letter, or your previous passport.
• Valid photo identification: voter credential, consular registration card, U.S. driving licence, professional licence or previous passport.
• Proof of address in the United States: a utility bill, rental agreement, bank statement or recent official correspondence.
• Certified population registry code, up to date.
• Originals and one copy of everything.
• For minors: both parents, or notarised permission from the absent parent.

At any Mexican consulate in the United States, by appointment. Mexico runs around fifty posts, more than any other country in this directory, plus a mobile consulate programme for communities far from a permanent office.

Additional notes

Bring the old passport even if expired

It works as proof of nationality and as photo identification at the same time, which simplifies the whole appointment. It is returned to you cancelled.

No birth certificate to hand

You can order a certified Mexican birth certificate online from the official government portal, which since 2026 requires a national digital identity account. Corrections to a certificate are handled through the civil registry’s own online service. Consulates also issue certified copies for a modest fee.

Collection times vary

Many consulates hand the passport over the same day when the file is complete. Others post it, which takes a few weeks. Ask when you book so you can plan around it.

No intermediaries needed

Appointments are free and the tariff is set centrally and identical at every post. Anyone charging to obtain an appointment is selling you something you can get yourself.

Incomplete files lose the slot

If you arrive without every required document, the consulate can refuse the application and the appointment is gone. Check the list on your own consulate’s page before travelling.
