Mexican Civil Records in the U.S. — 2026 Guide

Mexican consulates act as civil registry offices abroad. They register births, marriages and deaths that occur within their district and issue certified copies of those records. Because the consulate is a Mexican federal authority, the certificates it issues are valid across Mexico without apostille, legalisation or re-registration.

Fees breakdown

Copies are priced in the Federal Fees Act in dollars, so the amount charged can shift slightly between consulates and between months. The figures above are the ones published for 2026.

How to book

1. Work out which act you need: a new registration, an additional certified copy, or a correction.
2. Book through citas.sre.gob.mx, the MiConsulado portal, the consular WhatsApp line or by phone. Appointments are free and there is no authorised intermediary.
3. Download the application form for that specific act from your consulate’s website and fill it in before the appointment.
4. Bring originals plus two letter-size photocopies of everything. The consulate checks the originals against the copies and hands the originals back.
5. Collect the certified copy, normally the same day.

Required documents

• U.S. certificate of the event — long-form birth, marriage or death certificate — in original plus two copies. Short or abstract versions are not accepted.
• If the certificate was issued outside the United States, it must be apostilled or legalised and translated into Spanish.
• Valid official photo ID of the person registered, and of both parents where applicable, copied on both sides.
• Proof of Mexican nationality of at least one parent: Mexican passport, birth certificate, certificate of nationality, declaration of nationality or naturalisation letter.
• Parents’ marriage certificate, optional but useful when surnames differ.
• Two adult witnesses with valid ID at the consulates that still require them.

Where to file

Registrations must be filed at the consulate whose district covers the place where the event happened, which is not always the consulate nearest to where you live now.

Additional notes

Corrections to consular acts

Since 1 November 2025 consular offices can correct errors and omissions in the civil registry acts issued within their own district, which previously meant a court or registry procedure in Mexico. Errors in the underlying U.S. certificate must be fixed first with the U.S. vital records office.

Name suffixes

Surnames carrying a suffix such as JR, III, IV or V cannot be entered in the Mexican register as they appear on the U.S. certificate, because the Mexican system records paternal and maternal surnames only.

Minors

Both parents normally have to appear. When one cannot attend, the consulate requires a notarised consent letter, and without it the application is refused on the spot.

Mobile consulates

Many consulates run consulado sobre ruedas days in towns far from the fixed office, offering the same civil registry services with the same free appointment system.
