Egyptian Dual Citizenship in the U.S. — 2026 Guide

Egypt permits dual nationality, but not silently. An Egyptian who acquires a foreign nationality is expected to have obtained permission to retain Egyptian nationality, and the consular sections run a specific procedure for it. The retention does not release anyone from military service obligations in Egypt.

The documentary requirement is distinctive. Besides your own Egyptian birth certificate, the file asks for the Egyptian birth certificate of your father, or of an uncle or aunt — the purpose being to prove that the grandfather was Egyptian.

What the permission covers

Families often assume one application covers the household. It does not: each minor child requires their own, and adults are outside it altogether.

How to apply

1. Obtain the application form from the consular section, which does not publish it openly.
2. Gather your Egyptian birth certificate.
3. Obtain your father’s Egyptian birth certificate, or an uncle’s or aunt’s, to establish the paternal line.
4. Add copies of your valid Egyptian passport and identity card.
5. Add copies of the foreign passport, which must also be valid.
6. File a separate application for each minor child.

Do it around the naturalisation

The procedure is designed to accompany the acquisition of the foreign nationality. Leaving it for years afterwards complicates the file.

Military service survives it

Egyptian men keep their conscription obligations regardless of the permission. Families with sons should plan around that, not assume it disappears.

The grandfather requirement

Producing an uncle’s or aunt’s certificate is an unusual demand, and tracking it down takes time. Start early.

Children under 18

Each needs their own application. Preparing them together saves repeating the document gathering.
