The Dominican Republic is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so the direction of travel decides the route. A U.S. document going to the Dominican Republic needs an apostille from the state that issued it. A Dominican document coming to the United States is apostilled by the foreign ministry there, and the consulate can then certify that the ministry stamp is genuine.
Quick facts
Consular tariffs were standardised across the whole network in 2023 precisely to end the variation between posts, so the same service now costs the same in New York as anywhere else.
Fees breakdown
| Service | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Legalisation of a document | $25 | Standardised consular tariff |
| Signature certification | $25 | Per signature |
| Good conduct certificate | $25 | Issued by the consulate |
| General certifications | $100 | Residence, civil status and similar |
| Apostille on a U.S. document | $3–$25 | Secretary of State of the issuing state |
Payment is in U.S. dollars at the post. Check the accepted method before attending, since several offices do not take cards.
How to prepare a document
- Identify which country issued it, because that decides who certifies it.
- For U.S. documents, order a certified copy and send it to the Secretary of State of that state.
- For Dominican documents, have them apostilled by the foreign ministry before they leave the country.
- Where a Dominican document already carries the ministry stamp, the consulate can certify it for use here.
- Arrange a Spanish translation where the receiving office requires one.
Required documents
- Original document, certified or apostilled as appropriate.
- Identification of the person presenting it.
- Payment in the accepted form.
- Prepaid return envelope where the post offers a mail service.
What the consulate does
It legalises documents, certifies signatures, draws up powers of attorney and sworn declarations, issues good conduct certificates and handles passports and visas.

Additional notes
Certificates come from the electoral board
Birth, marriage and death certificates are issued by the electoral board, not the consulate, and its offices in the United States issue them directly.
Standardised tariffs
If a post quotes a different price for a standardised service, ask to see the current tariff table. Uniformity was the whole point of the 2023 reform.
Old certificates
Certificates issued before 2014 in the old format are widely refused. Order a current one before starting any file.
Order two copies
Dominican offices retain what they receive. A spare saves repeating the chain.
