Chinese Passport Renewal in the U.S. — 2026 Guide

Chinese passport applications in the United States no longer start at a counter. Everything begins in the China Consular app, where the applicant files the request and uploads the documents; only once the application shows as under review are the physical papers mailed to the embassy or the consulate general holding jurisdiction over that state.

Quick facts

Renewal can be started six months before expiry, and there is no fast-track service. Genuine emergencies are handled separately by contacting the consulate directly rather than by paying for speed.

Fees breakdown

Consulates accept card, money order or cashier’s check depending on the office. Cash and personal checks are not accepted.

How to renew

1. Install the China Consular app and register with your existing passport details.
2. File the application in the app and upload photographs and supporting documents for preliminary review.
3. Wait until the status changes to under review before sending anything physical.
4. Mail the documents to the embassy or consulate covering your state, with a prepaid return envelope.
5. Track progress in the app.
6. Receive the new passport by post. The previous one is cancelled and returned.

Required documents

• Current or most recent Chinese passport.
• Two photographs meeting the Chinese specification, which differs from the U.S. one.
• Proof of lawful status in the United States.
• Proof of U.S. residence within the consular district.
• For children: birth certificate and documents proving the relationship with the accompanying parent.
• Police report where the previous passport was lost or stolen.

The embassy and the consulates general divide the United States into districts. The application goes to the office covering your state of residence, regardless of which city is closest.

Everything runs through the app

Filing on paper without the app reference is not accepted. Sending documents before the application has been reviewed is the most common cause of returned envelopes.

Photographs

Chinese photograph rules are specific about background, dimensions and framing. U.S. passport photos are frequently rejected.

Children born in the United States

Children who hold U.S. citizenship are not issued Chinese passports. They travel to China on a travel document, which is applied for through the same app.
