Before you book anything, check one number. To apply for a Bangladeshi electronic passport you must hold either a national identity card or a birth registration certificate with a 17-digit number that can be verified online — and the names of the applicant and both parents in English on that verified page must match your application exactly. If they do not, the file stops before it starts.
Quick facts
The older machine-readable passport was discontinued in 2022, so every application is now for the electronic version, and it cannot be filed by post: the biometric stage requires attendance.

Payment rules are strict and uniform across the network: cash, personal checks and credit cards are not accepted. Money orders, cashier’s checks and official checks are, made out to the specific mission.
How to apply
- Verify your birth registration certificate online and check that the English names match what you will write.
- If your previous passport was an electronic one showing your identity card number, you must apply with that number, not the birth certificate.
- Book the appointment at the mission covering your state.
- Attend in person for biometrics with the originals and the photocopies listed.
- Pay by money order or cashier’s check, made out to that mission.
- Provide a prepaid priority or express return envelope if you want it posted to you.
Required documents
- Photocopy of the national identity card, front and back on one page, or the birth registration certificate with the verified webpage printed.
- Most recent Bangladeshi passport.
- Dual nationality certificate plus a copy of your U.S. passport, if you are a U.S. citizen.
- Proof of lawful status in the United States, or a notarised affidavit that you are not a U.S. citizen.
- Marriage or divorce certificate where marital status changes.
- Supporting documents and a self-declaration form for any change of personal data.
Where to apply
At the embassy in Washington or the consulates general, each covering assigned states. The network also runs consular tours to cities without a permanent office.
Additional notes
More than a year of validity left
Applicants whose current passport still has over a year to run generally cannot apply unless they can justify the need with a supporting document.
Changing your data
Any difference from the most recent passport — name, date of birth, parents’ names — falls under a specific ministry circular and requires evidence plus a self-declaration. It is the commonest cause of rejection.
Lost passports
A general diary must be filed at a police station immediately, and the original of that report is submitted with the application.
Consular tours
Missions publish visits to cities across their districts. For families far from a consulate they are the practical route.
