The Consulate General of Sweden in New York is one of Sweden's two career consular posts in the United
States, alongside the embassy in Washington. It covers nine states, and the list is wider than most people
expect: it takes in the whole of New England, which is the part that catches people out.
Below: the address and the floor, the nine states, what a career post can do that an honorary consul
cannot, and which honorary consulates sit inside this district.

- Type of office: Consulate General
The entrance is at the corner of 47th Street. The consulate is on the 40th floor, and in a tower with
unrelated tenants the floor is the part worth writing down.
🗺 The district is nine states, and it includes New England
This post covers New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island,
Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire.
The assumption worth correcting: people in Boston often take the Boston consulate to be their post for
everything. It is an honorary consulate, and it sits inside this district. So does the
one in Philadelphia. For an act an honorary consul cannot perform โ a passport above all โ someone in
Massachusetts or Pennsylvania comes here, not to Washington and not to their local consul.
📄 What a career post does that an honorary consul does not
The practical difference is the passport. An honorary consulate is usually a local figure with a small
office, able to certify, advise, help in an emergency and pass a file upward; it cannot take the biometric
data a Swedish passport requires. That has to happen at a career post, in person.
Everything that follows from identity follows the same rule: a national ID card, a coordination number,
a civil-status entry that the home register will accept. Ask before travelling which of them this post
takes and which the honorary consulate nearer you can handle, because the answer decides whether your trip
is across town or down the coast.
🏢 Two Swedish offices, and how to tell which is yours
Sweden runs the embassy in Washington and this consulate general, and nothing else of this kind in the
United States. If your address is in one of the nine states above, this is your post. If it is anywhere
else, it is Washington โ with whatever an honorary consulate near you can do without sending the file
anywhere.
Common questions before you go
Can I renew a Swedish passport here?
This is a career post, so yes โ a passport application is taken here in person, which is exactly what
an honorary consulate cannot do. Confirm the booking route before travelling: Sweden books passport
appointments through the Migration Agency's calendar rather than through the post's own site.
I live in Boston. Do I come to New York or go to the local consulate?
Massachusetts is in this district, and the Boston office is an honorary consulate. For certification,
advice or help in an emergency, Boston is nearer and competent. For a passport, you come here.
What is the exact address?
One Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, 885 Second Avenue, 40th Floor, New York, NY 10017, with the entrance at
the corner of 47th Street. Note the floor: the building has unrelated tenants and the lobby will not send
you up without it.
Which states does this office cover?
New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont and New
Hampshire. Nine in total.
Does it handle visas and residence permits?
Migration matters are run separately from consular service in the Swedish system, and the post is the
authority on what it takes. Ask before assuming a counter visit is the route: Sweden has moved much of
the migration side to its Migration Agency rather than its missions.
Where can I check the official information?
At www.swedenabroad.se/en/embassies/usa-new-york,
the post's own site and the source to follow. This page records what it published on 8 October 2026.
Checked on 8 October 2026 against the Consulate General of Sweden in New York on swedenabroad.se,
the site of Sweden's Ministry for Foreign Affairs, which gives the address, the floor, the telephone, the
email and the nine-state district, and names the honorary consulates in Boston and Philadelphia as sitting
inside it. Two things we are not stating: the opening hours of the counter and its appointment
arrangements, which that page does not set out as the Washington embassy does.
