The Embassy of Sweden is Sweden's diplomatic mission to the United States, and its consular counter
does the work for the Washington area. Sweden keeps two career posts in the country โ this embassy and
the Consulate General in New York โ with a network of honorary consulates around them. An honorary consul
cannot issue a passport; these two can.
What follows is what the embassy itself publishes: where it is, the one hour a day it answers the
telephone, what you can do without an appointment and what you cannot, and the step most people look for
in the wrong place.
📞 Quick Contact
- Address: 2900 K Street NW, Washington, DC 20007
- Phone: +1 202 467 2600
- Fax: +1 202 467 2699
- Email: DC@gov.se
- Official website: www.swedenabroad.se/en/embassies/usa-washington
- Type of office: Embassy
🕐 The telephone is open four hours a week
The embassy answers the telephone Tuesday to Friday, 09:00 to 10:00. One hour a day, four days a week.
That is worth knowing before you plan a call around your own morning, and it is why the embassy routes
most questions to email instead.
Outside office hours, in a genuine emergency, you call the same number and follow the recorded
instructions.
📄 Drop-in consular service, and what it does not cover
There is a counter you can walk into without an appointment: Monday to Thursday, 10:00 to 12:00, and
Friday, 10:30 to 12:30. In those slots the embassy handles collection of a passport, national ID card or
driving licence, certificates of life, legalisations, and general questions.
Two things it does not cover, and both catch people out:
- Applying for a passport or a coordination number. Those need an appointment. You
cannot walk in for them, however long you are prepared to queue. - Migration matters. Residence permits, visas and anything else on the migration side
are not dealt with at the drop-in counter at all. They go to a separate address,
visa.washington@gov.se.
📅 The passport appointment is not booked at the embassy
This is the detail worth the whole page. The appointment for a Swedish passport is booked through the
appointment calendar of Migrationsverket, the Swedish Migration Agency, not through the
embassy's own site. Anyone hunting for a booking form on the embassy pages, or telephoning during that
single hour to ask for a slot, is looking in the wrong place.
The calendar runs to a fixed horizon โ at the time of checking, bookings were open until 31 December.
When no slots appear, that means the embassy is fully booked rather than closed, and the instruction is
to check again later. There is no waiting list to join.
Questions the information pages do not answer go to
passport.washington@gov.se, and questions about
coordination numbers to ambassaden.washington-samordningsnummer@gov.se.
Sweden splits its consular email by procedure, so writing to the general address about a passport usually
only adds a hop.
🏢 Three embassies share this address
2900 K Street NW is House of Sweden, a building that also holds the Embassy of
Iceland and the Embassy of Liechtenstein, along with cultural and exhibition
space open to the public during events. If you are told to go to "the embassy at 2900 K Street",
establish which one. The three are separate missions with separate counters, separate telephone numbers
and separate opening hours.
Common questions before you go
Can I renew a Swedish passport here?
Yes, but only with an appointment, and the appointment is booked through Migrationsverket's calendar
rather than through the embassy. You can collect a finished passport at the drop-in counter without
one.
Can I just turn up?
For collecting documents, certificates of life, legalisations and general questions, yes, within the
drop-in hours. For applying for a passport or a coordination number, no.
Why can I never get through on the telephone?
Because the line is open 09:00 to 10:00, Tuesday to Friday. Outside that hour nobody answers except
for emergencies. Email is the intended route for ordinary questions, and the address depends on the
procedure.
Does this office handle visas and residence permits?
Those are migration matters and are not handled at the consular counter. They go to
visa.washington@gov.se. A visa question asked at the drop-in service will be redirected.
Is this the right office for me, or is New York?
The Consulate General in New York covers New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode
Island, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire. If you live in one of those nine states, that
is your post rather than this one. Everywhere else, consular work for Swedish nationals runs through
Washington or through an honorary consulate.
Where can I check the official information?
At www.swedenabroad.se/en/embassies/usa-washington,
which is the embassy's own site and the source to follow. Hours and booking arrangements change; this
page records what it published on 8 October 2026.
Checked on 8 October 2026 against the Embassy of Sweden's own contact page on swedenabroad.se, the
site of Sweden's Ministry for Foreign Affairs. One thing we are not stating: the embassy does not publish
which entrance or floor the consular counter uses inside House of Sweden, and we are not guessing at
it.
