Liechtenstein Passport Renewal in the U.S. — 2026

Data last verified: September 2026

Do not go to the Liechtenstein embassy. It exists, on the Georgetown waterfront in Washington, but Liechtenstein citizens needing consular services are required to contact the Swiss representation for their district instead. Switzerland has looked after Liechtenstein’s consular interests since 1919, by agreement between the two countries.

So the practical question is not "where is the Liechtenstein consulate" but "which Swiss representation covers my state". The Swiss consulates general divide the country into districts, and yours determines where your file goes.

Registration works the same way: Liechtenstein nationals abroad are entered in the Swiss Abroad Register, and changes of address or civil status are notified through Switzerland’s online consular desk.

How to proceed

  1. Identify which Swiss consular district covers the state where you live.
  2. Contact that Swiss representation, not the Liechtenstein embassy.
  3. Register in the Swiss Abroad Register if you have not already.
  4. Use the online desk for address and civil status changes.
  5. Ask that representation for current passport requirements and fees.
  6. Keep the Liechtenstein embassy for diplomatic and official matters only.

Additional notes

An arrangement over a century old

Switzerland has represented Liechtenstein’s interests abroad since 1919. It is not an improvisation, and the Swiss authorities publish it plainly.

Districts matter

The Swiss consulates general each cover a defined group of states. Going to the wrong one wastes a journey.

The embassy still exists

It opened in 2002 and moved to the Georgetown waterfront in 2008. It is simply not where routine consular work happens.

Honorary consulates

Liechtenstein also maintains representations in several American cities. Confirm what any of them can actually do before travelling.
