Peruvian Civil Records in the U.S. โ€” 2026 Guide

Checked September 2026. This page was written for this country and its details were checked against the authorityโ€™s own sources that month. Consular rules still change without notice, so confirm anything that will cost you a journey or a fee with the office that covers you. How we check our data.

Peruvian consulates hold a civil registry, and registration itself is free: each certified copy of the resulting record costs around six dollars. The rules on jurisdiction are stricter than in most networks, and one rule about marriages catches a large number of families.

The marriage rule: if either spouse’s identity document still shows them as married, the consulate cannot register a new marriage even when a U.S. divorce decree exists. The divorce must first be recognised by a Peruvian court, which then has the dissolution annotated.

The consulate keeps the original U.S. certificate for its files in a birth registration, so order more than one certified copy before attending.

How to file

  1. Order certified copies of the U.S. certificate from the county where the event occurred.
  2. Check whether the event happened inside your consulate’s district. If not, have the certificate legalised by the consulate covering that county first.
  3. Book the appointment for the specific registry act.
  4. Attend with the parents’ or spouses’ identity documents, in original and physical form.
  5. Register the child’s identity document at the same visit where the consulate allows it.
  6. Collect the Peruvian record and order the copies you will need later.

Where to file

At the consulate covering the county where the event happened, unless the certificate has been legalised by that post and you are filing elsewhere.

Additional notes

Divorces granted in the United States

A U.S. decree does not by itself change civil status in Peru. Recognition by a Peruvian court is the step that allows the annotation, and only then can a new marriage be registered.

Identity documents and civil status

Because the registry reads civil status from the identity document, an outdated card blocks procedures that have nothing to do with it.

Registering and identifying together

Several posts let parents register the birth and apply for the child’s first identity document in the same appointment, which saves a second slot.

Keep copies current

Later procedures often ask for recently issued copies, so a record obtained years ago usually needs a fresh copy.
