Peru permits dual nationality. A child born in the United States to a Peruvian father or mother is Peruvian, and the consular birth registration is what makes that operative: it produces the Peruvian record on which the identity document and the passport are built.
Quick facts
Peruvians who lost their nationality can also recover it through a consular procedure, which several posts handle as a distinct service with its own appointment type.
Fees breakdown
| Step | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Consular birth registration | Free | Certified copies charged separately |
| Certified copy of the record | Around $6 | Order several |
| Identity document for a minor | Around $5 | First issue |
| Electronic passport afterwards | Consular tariff | Separate appointment |
| Recovery of nationality | Consular tariff | Separate procedure |
Acquiring U.S. citizenship does not require giving up Peruvian nationality, and both documents can be held and used side by side.
How to register a child
- Order certified copies of the U.S. birth certificate from the county of birth.
- Confirm that the consulate covering that county is the one receiving the file.
- Book the civil registry appointment.
- Attend with both parents’ identity documents, physical and valid.
- Apply for the child’s first identity document at the same appointment where that is offered.
- Once the record and the card exist, book the passport appointment.
Required documents
- Certified copy of the U.S. birth certificate, which the consulate retains.
- Peruvian parent’s valid identity document.
- Other parent’s passport or official photo identification.
- Photographs for the identity document.
- Parents’ marriage record where it is relevant.
- Personal appearance of the declaring parent.
Where to register
At the consulate covering the county where the child was born. Travelling consular days and consular Saturdays also handle these files.

What it unlocks
The identity document, the electronic passport, inheritance and property rights, national-rate education and the right to vote in Peruvian elections from abroad.
Adults registering late
There is no age limit, though older files are examined more closely and may need additional evidence of the parental link.
Recovering nationality
Former Peruvians apply through a dedicated consular procedure rather than through the birth registry.
Elections
Voting from abroad is tied to the identity document and to being registered at the right consulate, so keep both current.
