Every Peruvian national abroad, adult or minor, is entitled to an electronic passport, and the validity granted depends on the tiers set by law rather than on what you ask for. The booklet is produced in Lima and sent to the consulate by diplomatic pouch, which is what makes the timetable long.
Quick facts
A valid national identity document is the precondition. Without it, or without a certified copy, the passport file does not open, and since August 2025 only the electronic version of that card is issued.
Fees breakdown
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic passport | Consular tariff, commonly $40–$70 | Depends on the validity tier |
| Identity document, first issue for a minor | Around $5 in cash | Alongside the birth registration |
| Certified copy of a civil record | Around $6 | Per copy |
| Safe conduct for return travel | Consular tariff | When there is no valid passport |
| Payment | Cash at many posts | Confirm before attending |
Several consulates take cash only for these services, which catches people out on the day. Check the accepted method when you book.
How to renew
- Confirm which consulate covers your county and state, since districts are drawn tightly.
- Book the appointment in the online system for the specific procedure.
- Bring your valid identity document, or a certified copy where the consulate accepts one.
- Bring a passport-size photograph and your consular registration certificate.
- Arrive early, since forms are completed on site before the appointment starts.
- Wait for the booklet to arrive from Lima and collect it, or receive it by the method your post uses.
Required documents
- Valid national identity document, in original.
- Consular registration certificate.
- Photograph to the published specification.
- Previous passport where you hold one.
- Cash for the tariff.
- For minors: the Peruvian birth record and both parents’ documents.
Where to renew
Consulates cover named counties and states, and the boundaries are narrow enough that residents of neighbouring counties are routinely redirected. Consular Saturdays and travelling consular days extend coverage.

The identity card comes first
Renewing or obtaining the electronic identity document is a separate appointment and a separate fee, and it gates everything else. Deal with it before the passport.
Validity tiers
Validity is fixed by law according to the applicant’s circumstances. Asking for a longer book does not change the tier you qualify for.
Travelling consular days
Itinerant consulates and consular Saturdays offer the same document services in cities far from a permanent post. Dates are announced by each consulate.
Lost passports
Report the loss to the police, keep the report, and ask the consulate about a safe conduct if you need to travel before the replacement arrives.
