Nigerian passports are applied for online through the immigration service portal, not at a consulate counter, and the fee is paid there too. Since April 2025 there is also a contactless renewal route through the immigration service’s mobile app, which removes the consulate visit entirely for people who qualify.

Domestic fees in Nigeria were raised in 2025, but the rates for applications made abroad did not change. Treat the portal figure as the baseline and confirm any mission charges separately.
How to renew
- Check that your identification number is valid and matches your passport details.
- If you qualify for the app route — existing passport, no data corrections — download the immigration service app and complete the renewal, including fingerprint capture on your phone.
- Otherwise start the application on the immigration portal, selecting the United States as the processing country and the office where you will attend.
- Print two copies of the completed application, plus the acknowledgment slip and receipt.
- Pay by card or money order and note the reference number.
- Attend the biometrics appointment in person at the mission, then collect or receive the passport.
Required documents
- Expired or current Nigerian passport. If it is not presented, the application is treated as a lost passport case.
- Photocopy of the data page showing photograph, full name and date of birth.
- National identification number slip.
- Printed application, acknowledgment slip and payment receipt.
- Proof of U.S. address.
- Police report and sworn affidavit where the previous passport was lost.
Where to apply
Only three missions in the United States take passport biometrics. Visa application offices in other cities handle visas only and cannot process passports, which is worth checking before travelling.

Who can use the app
The contactless route is for renewals with a valid identification number and no changes to personal data. First-time applicants and anyone correcting a name still attend in person.
Apply early
Missions advise applying for renewal well before expiry, and appointment availability at the three posts is the main constraint on the timetable.
Name corrections
Changing a name or date of birth on the record is a separate procedure with its own evidence requirements, and it cannot be done through the app.
Keep the receipt
The reference number and payment receipt are what link your file at every later stage. Losing them means starting the online application again.
