A child born in the United States to a Nicaraguan father or mother is Nicaraguan by descent, and the consular network is where that becomes documents: first the birth registration, then the passport, then the identity card at eighteen.
Quick facts
Nicaraguans who acquire another nationality do not automatically lose their own, and passport renewal for dual nationals is ordinary consular work across the network.
The sequence
| Step | What it produces | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Registration of the birth abroad | Nicaraguan birth record | At the consulate |
| Birth certificate | The document everything else needs | From the registry in Nicaragua |
| Passport | Travel document | Around $50, issued in Managua |
| Identity card at eighteen | National identification | Electoral council, via the consulate |
| Consular registration card | Local identification | Optional but widely used |
Each step depends on the one before it. Trying to skip to the passport without a registered birth simply ends at the counter.
How to register a child
- Order the child’s U.S. birth certificate naming both parents.
- Check that the Nicaraguan parent’s own documents are current.
- Book the appointment through the ministry portal.
- Attend with originals and enlarged copies of everything.
- Pay the tariff and keep the receipt.
- Apply for the passport once the Nicaraguan record exists.
Required documents
- Child’s U.S. birth certificate, original.
- Nicaraguan parent’s birth certificate and identity card.
- Other parent’s identification.
- Parents’ marriage certificate where applicable.
- Proof of U.S. address.
- Completed form and payment.
Where to apply
At the consulate covering your area, through the ministry’s booking portal.
Additional notes
Parents’ documents must be current
An expired identity card on the parent’s side is the commonest reason a child’s file stops. Renew it first.
If the service is refused
Some Nicaraguans abroad have reported being unable to obtain or renew consular documents. Where that happens, an immigration lawyer in the United States is better placed to advise on the consequences for your status here than any directory.
Travel documents
Dual nationals enter and leave Nicaragua on the Nicaraguan passport and the United States on the U.S. one.
Start before you need it
Between registration, the certificate from Nicaragua and the passport, the full sequence runs to months.
