Italian Visa Application in the U.S. โ€” 2026 Guide

Checked September 2026. This page was written for this country and its details were checked against the authorityโ€™s own sources that month. Consular rules still change without notice, so confirm anything that will cost you a journey or a fee with the office that covers you. How we check our data.
Data last verified: September 2026

U.S. citizens do not need a visa to visit Italy for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and neither do nationals of around sixty other countries. Visa work at Italian consulates in the United States therefore splits into two very different files: short-stay Schengen visas for third-country nationals living here, and national long-stay visas for anyone — Americans included — who wants to study, work or retire in Italy.

Quick facts

Fee€90 Schengen, more for national visas
Processing15 calendar days for short stay

The short-stay fee has been €90 for adults since 11 June 2024 under the EU implementing regulation that revised the Visa Code, with €45 for children aged six to twelve and no fee below six.

Visa fees are not refundable if the application is refused, and a refusal carries a right of appeal within the deadline stated on the standard refusal form.

How to apply

  1. Establish which visa you need. Tourism under 90 days means a short-stay visa or, for visa-exempt nationalities, no visa at all.
  2. Apply to the consulate covering your U.S. residence, and choose Italy only if it is your main destination or first point of entry in the Schengen area.
  3. Complete the application form matching the visa type and gather the supporting documents for that category.
  4. Book the appointment and attend in person for fingerprints and a digital photograph.
  5. Pay the fee in dollars at the rate in force that quarter.
  6. Wait for the decision, normally within 15 calendar days for short stays and considerably longer for national visas.

Where to apply

Jurisdiction follows your U.S. address. Some consulates outsource intake to a visa application centre while keeping the decision in-house.

Additional notes

ETIAS

Travellers who enter Italy without a visa will need an ETIAS authorisation once the system starts, which is planned for the last quarter of 2026. It costs €7, lasts three years and is not a visa.

The 90/180 rule

Days spent in any Schengen country count towards the same allowance, and the entry-exit system now tracks it automatically. Overstaying affects future applications.

Elective residence

The elective residence visa is for people supporting themselves from stable passive income without working in Italy. Consulates assess the income evidence strictly and the category does not permit employment.

Fee exemptions

Family members of EU citizens, and students and researchers on documented programmes, are exempt from the short-stay fee under the Visa Code.
