Italian passports are issued in the United States by the consulate covering your state, and the first requirement has nothing to do with the passport itself: you must be registered with AIRE, the register of Italians resident abroad, and your record must already have been processed by your consulate. Applications from citizens whose AIRE file is still pending are turned away.
Quick facts
Italian consular fees are set in euros and converted into dollars every quarter. The figure above applies to the quarter ending 30 September 2026; check your consulate’s current table before buying a money order, because an incorrect amount means the service is not provided that day.
Fees breakdown
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary passport | $135.50 | Quarter ending 30 September 2026 |
| Appointment through Prenot@Mi | Free | Resold appointments are cancelled |
| AIRE registration and updates | Free | Through the Fast It portal |
| Payment method | Money order or cashier’s check | No cash, cards or personal checks |
Adult passports are issued with ten years of validity. Passports for minors carry shorter validity and additional consent requirements from both parents.
How to renew
- Log into Fast It and confirm your AIRE registration has been processed and transmitted to your Italian municipality.
- Book an individual appointment on Prenot@Mi with your own account. Booking is free, and appointments obtained through resellers or bots are cancelled.
- Confirm the appointment in the window your consulate specifies — several cancel automatically if you do not.
- Check the current quarterly fee and buy a money order for the exact amount, made out to that specific consulate.
- Attend in person with the completed application, two identical passport photographs and your previous passport.
- Give fingerprints and collect the passport or receive it by the method your consulate uses.
Required documents
- Completed passport application and self-declaration form.
- Two recent, identical passport photographs, white background, neutral expression, preferably without glasses.
- Previous Italian passport, or a police report if it was lost or stolen.
- For citizens holding only Italian citizenship: a copy of the U.S. resident card or entry visa.
- For dual citizens: a copy of the U.S. passport and the naturalisation certificate.
- Money order for the exact fee in force that quarter.
- For minors: consent from both parents and their identity documents.
Where to renew
Applications go to the consulate holding your AIRE registration. Out-of-district applications are accepted only for a proven emergency arising while you are temporarily in that district, and then only with authorisation from the competent office.

AIRE comes first
Moving within the United States means updating AIRE before anything else. An outdated address is the most frequent reason a passport appointment is cancelled at the window.
Honorary consulates
Several districts allow residents of outlying states and counties to use honorary consulates for part of the procedure. Jurisdiction lists are published by each consulate general.
Appointment scarcity
When no dates appear on Prenot@Mi, the system offers a waiting list. Some consulates also accept email or telephone booking for applicants over 75.
Minors travelling alone
Italian minors under 14 travelling without their parents need additional documentation naming the accompanying adult, requested at the same consulate.
