Irish Dual Citizenship in the U.S. โ€” 2026 Guide

Read this before anything else, because it is the rule that ends more Irish claims than any other. If you obtain citizenship through the foreign birth register, your own children can only claim through you if you were registered before they were born. Register late and the line stops with you.

Who qualifies, in outline: anyone born on the island of Ireland before 2005 is an Irish citizen automatically, as is anyone with a parent born there. A grandparent born in Ireland gives entitlement through the foreign birth register. Beyond that, the line continues only where each generation registered in time.

The routes

Births on the island from 1 January 2005 no longer confer citizenship automatically in every case: entitlement depends on the parents’ status or residence history, following the constitutional change of 2004.

How to apply

  1. Establish which route applies, since the automatic ones need no registration at all.
  2. Gather long-form birth certificates for every generation in the chain.
  3. Add marriage certificates covering each name change, and death certificates where relevant.
  4. Apply online for foreign birth registration and post the original documents.
  5. Wait: processing has run to many months, and the documents are held meanwhile.
  6. Apply for the passport once registration is complete.

Required documents

Where to apply

Online, with documents sent to Dublin. Missions provide information but do not decide these applications.

Additional notes

Register before the next generation arrives

It bears repeating. Anyone planning a family who might one day want Irish citizenship for their children should register first, not later.

Great-grandparents

A great-grandparent born in Ireland gives no entitlement by itself. It works only if the intervening generation registered before your birth.

What it is worth

Irish citizenship carries the right to live and work throughout the European Union and, under the common travel area, in the United Kingdom.

Your documents are held

Original certificates stay in Dublin while the file is processed. If you need them meanwhile, order duplicates before applying.
