The Greek ministry states the position plainly: a Greek citizen is a person duly registered in the records of a municipality of the Hellenic Republic. That registration is the recognition of the right to citizenship and the premise for the passport. Having Greek ancestry is not the same as being registered, and only the second gets you anything.
Quick facts
Files by descent commonly take three to five years, because they depend on municipal offices in Greece locating and reconciling old records. This is not a procedure to begin two months before a trip.
Military service: the part people miss
| Status | Effect | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Permanent resident abroad certificate | Deferral from conscription | Issued only by Greek consulates |
| Staying in Greece over six months in a year | Status lost, conscription applies | Calendar year basis |
| Certificate of stay for military use | Travel up to 30 days a year | Allows passport issue or renewal |
| Supporting documents | Filed once, not annually | Until the new law phases in from 2028 |
Men aged 19 to 45 are subject to compulsory service. For someone claiming citizenship through ancestry, that obligation arrives with the citizenship, and the consulate is the only place that can issue the certificates managing it.

Consider the military obligation before you file
Parents registering an adult son should understand what registration brings with it. Exemptions, reduced terms and deferrals exist, but the obligation is real and administered strictly.
The six-month trap in Greece
A deferral is lost by spending more than six months of a calendar year in Greece. Anyone planning an extended stay should check the consequences first.
Ancestry is not citizenship
Being descended from Greeks gives a right to apply. Until the municipal entry exists, there is no passport, no vote and no EU rights.
Start early
Three to five years is the realistic horizon, and it lengthens when a generation’s marriage was never registered.
