Greece keeps two separate record systems and confusing them is the single commonest mistake in diaspora files. The lixiarcheio records events — a birth, a marriage, a death. The dimotologio records people and families in a municipality, and it is the register that determines whether the Greek state considers you a citizen.
Quick facts
An event registered in the lixiarcheio does not by itself put you in the dimotologio. Both steps are needed, in that order, and only the second produces a passport.
Fees breakdown
| Service | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Registration of a birth abroad | Consular tariff | Through the registry department |
| Registration of a marriage abroad | Consular tariff | Required before a child’s file |
| Registration of a death abroad | Consular tariff | Also a certificate for repatriating remains |
| Municipal registration certificate | Charged in Greece | Issued by the municipality |
| U.S. certificate, apostilled and translated | $15–$50 plus fees | Recent issue required |
The registry department asks applicants to complete a questionnaire before booking, which exists precisely because these files vary so much and arrive incomplete so often.
How to file
- Fill in the registry questionnaire before you book anything.
- Establish whether the parents’ marriage is already registered in Greece, since a child’s file usually depends on it.
- Order the U.S. certificates recently, apostilled and translated into Greek.
- Book the registry department appointment specifically.
- File the event registration, then pursue the municipal entry.
- Obtain a municipal registration certificate, which is what later procedures ask for.
Required documents
- U.S. certificate of the event, recent, apostilled and translated.
- Greek parent’s identity card or passport.
- Parents’ marriage certificate, registered in Greece.
- Evidence of the parent’s municipal registration.
- Completed questionnaire and application forms.
- Proof of address abroad.

Register the marriage first
An unregistered marriage blocks a child’s file. It is the most frequent cause of a stalled Greek family record.
Which municipality
Families are registered in a specific municipality, usually the ancestral one. Identifying it correctly is half the work in a descent file.
Repatriating remains
Consulates issue the certificate required to transport human remains to Greece, handled by the same department.
Names in Greek
Transliteration between the Greek and Latin alphabets produces variations that have to be reconciled document by document.
