Greek consulates do not issue passports. Since 2006 that is the job of the Hellenic Police, and the consulate’s role is precisely defined: collect the application, forward it to Athens, receive the finished passport and hand it over. The whole cycle runs about four to five weeks.
Quick facts
That last line is the one that ruins appointments. Supporting documents must have been issued within the last six months, under the ministerial decision governing passports. A certificate obtained a year ago is refused however valid it looks.
Fees breakdown
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Passport, standard | Around €84 | Paid by money order or card by post |
| Certificate of municipal registration | Charged separately | Needed if you have no Greek ID card |
| Signature certification for a parent’s consent | Consular tariff | Or done before a U.S. authority |
| Military certificates | Consular tariff | Issued only by Greek consulates |
| Lost or stolen declaration | Consular tariff | Filed before any replacement |
Payment methods vary between posts. Confirm when booking rather than at the counter, since several take money orders only.
How to apply
- Check that you are registered in a Greek municipal register, because without that there is no passport.
- Obtain fresh supporting documents, issued within the previous six months.
- Book the appointment with the passport department of the post covering you.
- Attend in person: applications cannot be made by anyone else.
- Bring photo identification just to enter the building, which is required at the door.
- Collect the passport when the consulate notifies you it has arrived from Athens.
Required documents
- Greek police identity card, or an original certificate of municipal registration if you have none.
- Most recent Greek passport, even if expired.
- Two recent colour photographs to the published specification.
- Proof of address abroad.
- For men aged 19 to 45: the applicable military service certificate.
- For minors: both parents, or the written consent of the absent parent with the signature certified.
Where to apply
At the embassy or the consulate general covering your state. Greece runs one of the larger networks in the United States, and every department within a post books separately.

Every department has its own queue
Passports, registry, powers of attorney, visas, certificates and military service are separate services with separate appointments and separate email addresses. Booking the wrong one wastes the slot.
The six-month rule
Plan the order of your paperwork around it. Obtain certificates last, not first, or they will have aged out by the time the appointment comes round.
Military service and the passport
For men in the conscription age range, the passport depends on holding the right military certificate. That is covered on the citizenship page below.
Renew early
Renewal is possible up to six months before expiry, and appointment availability is the binding constraint at the busier posts.
