French Passport Renewal in the U.S. โ€” 2026 Guide

Checked September 2026. This page was written for this country and its details were checked against the authorityโ€™s own sources that month. Consular rules still change without notice, so confirm anything that will cost you a journey or a fee with the office that covers you. How we check our data.
Data last verified: September 2026

French passports are applied for at the consulate covering your state, and the fee is not paid at the counter: it is bought online as an electronic stamp designed specifically for French nationals abroad. Tariffs are identical across the whole French network in the United States.

Quick facts

Passports are not produced on site. Progress can be followed online and the consulate sends a message when the document is ready, which is usually several weeks later and longer before the summer and end-of-year holidays.

If you cannot buy the stamp online, the consulate can take the payment at the appointment, but the online route avoids a problem on the day.

How to renew

  1. Check which consulate covers your state and, ideally, register on its list of French nationals abroad.
  2. Buy the electronic stamp for the right amount.
  3. Book an appointment. One appointment covers one person, adult or child, although collecting a passport and an identity card together needs only one.
  4. Attend for fingerprints and to file the application with the supporting documents.
  5. Choose collection in person or return by secure mail, which is available only if you are registered with that consulate.
  6. Track the file online and respond to the message telling you it is ready.

Required documents

Where to apply

Consulates cover assigned states. The return-by-mail option is tied to the consulate where you are registered, so filing away from home removes it.

Additional notes

The envelope rules are strict

Where the passport is returned by mail, your own address must appear as both sender and recipient, it must match the address on the consular register, and each envelope can carry only one passport.

The identity card is free

The national identity card carries no fee, which makes it worth requesting alongside the passport for anyone who travels within Europe.

Register with the consulate

Registration is not compulsory but it unlocks mail delivery, voting from abroad and faster handling of civil status matters.

Plan around the peaks

Production times lengthen noticeably before the summer and Christmas holidays. Filing in the quiet months is the cheapest way to avoid a problem.
