French Visa Application in the U.S. — 2026 Guide

Data last verified: September 2026

U.S. citizens travel to France without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. French consular visa work in the United States is therefore split between short-stay visas for third-country nationals living here and the long-stay visa that Americans need to study, work, retire or settle.

Quick facts

Fee€90 short stay, €99 long stay
Processing15 days short stay, longer for long stay
AppointmentAt a visa centre
FormOnline application, printed for the appointment

The long-stay visa that doubles as a residence permit is the standard route for stays over three months. It has to be validated online within three months of arrival in France, and missing that step invalidates the whole thing.

Additional notes

ETIAS

Visa-exempt travellers will need a travel authorisation once the European system starts, planned for the last quarter of 2026. It is not a visa and does not replace one.

Validate, then breathe

The online validation after arrival is what turns the long-stay visa into a residence permit. It is quick, it is cheap, and forgetting it is the most common expensive mistake.

Students

Student applications usually pass through the study-abroad procedure before the visa file, so start earlier than the visa timetable alone suggests.

The 90/180 rule

Days in any Schengen country count towards the same allowance, now tracked automatically at the border.
