Powers of attorney for use in Ethiopia follow the same route as every other document since April 2026: prepared according to what the receiving office requires, authenticated federally in the United States first, and then processed through the ministry’s digital system.

Ethiopia registers powers of attorney through its documents authentication and registration service, and an instrument that has not been registered there will not carry a property transaction.

Property and inheritance are the usual reasons, and Ethiopian land tenure — where land is state-owned and what is transferred is a use right — makes precise drafting essential.

How to apply

  1. Ask the lawyer or documents office in Ethiopia what wording and format they require.
  2. Have the document notarised in the United States.
  3. Obtain the state certification, then the federal authentication.
  4. Submit the request through the digital system and print the confirmation page.
  5. Mail the original, the confirmation, the money order and a prepaid envelope.
  6. Send the finished document to Ethiopia and have it registered.

Required documents

Where to apply

Through the ministry’s digital system, with documents sent to the embassy in Washington.

Additional notes

Land is a use right

Because land itself is not privately owned, what a power deals with is the right to use it and whatever is built on it. Drafting should reflect that.

Register it there

Authentication here is only half the job. Registration in Ethiopia is what makes the instrument effective.

Be specific

Name the property, the holding and the acts authorised. Vague instruments are refused.

Revocation

Revoking requires a further document through the same chain, with notice to the registering office.
