The starting point is blunt: Ethiopian law does not permit dual citizenship. An Ethiopian who acquires another nationality loses the Ethiopian one. What exists instead is the Ethiopian Origin ID Card, widely known as the yellow card, issued to foreign nationals of Ethiopian origin.
Quick facts
The card is not a consolation prize. Holders need no entry visa, no residence permit and no work permit; they are treated as domestic investors, which matters enormously for anyone buying property or starting a business; and they are outside the restrictions applied to foreign nationals on pensions.
What the card does and does not give
| Right | Position | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Entry without a visa | Yes | The card serves instead |
| Residence and work | Yes | No permits required |
| Investing as a domestic investor | Yes | A substantial advantage |
| Pension treatment | Not restricted as a foreigner | Unlike other foreign nationals |
| Ethiopian passport and the vote | No | Those require citizenship |
The trade is therefore clear. Naturalising abroad costs you the Ethiopian passport and political rights, but the card preserves most of the practical connection to the country.
How to apply
- Gather evidence of Ethiopian origin from the accepted list of documents.
- Have foreign documents authenticated through the federal stage and the digital system.
- Complete the origin card application with full personal details.
- Disclose any criminal history exactly as the form requires.
- Submit with your foreign passport and the fee.
- Renew the card before it expires, since lapsing removes the benefits.
Required documents
- Valid foreign passport.
- Evidence of Ethiopian origin: old passport, birth certificate, local identity card, community letter, bank book or marriage certificate.
- Photographs to specification.
- Completed application with the required disclosures.
- Authenticated foreign documents where they form part of the proof.
- Payment in the accepted form.
Where to apply
At the embassy in Washington, which handles origin card applications and renewals for the United States.
Additional notes
It saves money on paperwork too
Card holders pay the lower authentication fee for documents, which adds up for anyone dealing with Ethiopian institutions regularly.
Children
A child born in the United States to an Ethiopian parent is normally a U.S. citizen, and the origin card is the route that preserves their connection to Ethiopia.
Before naturalising
If you hold an Ethiopian passport and are considering another citizenship, understand the consequence first and plan the card application around it.
Keep the card current
The privileges depend on a valid card. An expired one leaves you in the position of an ordinary foreign national.
