Two details of the Chilean procedure catch families out. The original birth certificate is never returned — it stays in the civil registry in Chile — and a child over six years old must attend the consulate in person so that their fingerprints can be taken.

Quick facts

Both parentsRequired for a minor
Over six years oldChild attends for fingerprints
Original certificateNot returned
AdultsRegister themselves

The Chilean parent’s own Chilean birth certificate must be updated to the date of the procedure, not a copy from years ago, and their identity card must be current.

What each situation needs

Where a parent is the child of Chileans but was never registered as Chilean, the Chilean grandparent must make a sworn declaration at the consulate stating their relationship to the child. That requires the grandparent to be available and able to attend.

How to file

  1. Order the child’s U.S. birth certificate and have it apostilled.
  2. Prepare unofficial Spanish translations of the certificate and the apostille.
  3. Obtain an updated Chilean birth certificate for the Chilean parent.
  4. Email the scans to the post’s civil registry address and wait for confirmation.
  5. Attend with both parents, and with the child if over six.
  6. Hand over the original certificate, which will not come back.

Required documents

Where to file

At the consulate covering your place of residence, with the file forwarded to the civil registry in Chile.

Additional notes

Order two certificates

Since the original is retained, having a second one saves trouble when the child needs it for something else.

Both parents, not one

Registrations for minors must be requested by both parents. Where they are married, both attend so the child is recognised by both.

Bring the child if over six

It is a fingerprint requirement, not a formality, and turning up without them ends the appointment.

Allow months

Completion depends on the civil registry in Chile and has run to a year or more at some posts.
