U.S. citizens travel to Chile without a visa for tourism. Chilean consular visa work in the United States therefore covers third-country nationals resident here and people moving for work, study or residence, processed as residence permits and transitory stay permits.

Chile reformed its migration system in recent years, and one consequence matters: certain permits must now be applied for from outside the country rather than converted after arriving as a tourist.

How to apply

  1. Check whether your nationality and purpose need a permit at all.
  2. Identify the category and confirm it must be applied for from abroad.
  3. Order the supporting documents and have them apostilled.
  4. Arrange translations into Spanish where required.
  5. Request the appointment by email or through the online agenda.
  6. Register with the authorities in Chile after arrival and obtain an identity card.

Required documents

Where to apply

At the consulate covering your area, through its published appointment channel.

Additional notes

Chileans need no permit

Anyone with a Chilean parent or grandparent born in Chile should read the citizenship page first. It is a better outcome than any visa.

Study certificates

Consulates run a specific legalisation cycle for educational certificates, which matters for anyone enrolling or seeking recognition of qualifications in Chile.

Documents expire

Criminal records have a short validity and the apostille does not extend it. Order them close to filing.

Apply from abroad

Arriving as a tourist and hoping to convert status is no longer reliable for several categories.
