Chilean Passport Renewal in the U.S. โ€” 2026 Guide

Checked September 2026. This page was written for this country and its details were checked against the authorityโ€™s own sources that month. Consular rules still change without notice, so confirm anything that will cost you a journey or a fee with the office that covers you. How we check our data.
Data last verified: September 2026

Chilean consulates renew biometric passports and identity cards, and every appointment has to be requested by email and confirmed before you attend. There are no walk-ins, and the posts use different email addresses for different services, so writing to the wrong one costs days.

The identity card matters as much as the passport, because it is what unlocks the rest: among other things, you need a valid cรฉdula to obtain the digital credential described below.

Chile does not publish a single dollar tariff across its network, so confirm the amount and the accepted payment method when the appointment is agreed.

How to renew

  1. Identify the consulate covering your area and the correct email address for the service.
  2. Send the documents the post asks for, scanned as PDFs.
  3. Wait for the appointment to be confirmed with a specific day and time.
  4. Attend in person for the photograph and fingerprints.
  5. Check whether your identity card also needs renewing, and do both in one visit.
  6. Pay the tariff in the form the post accepts.

Required documents

Where to apply

At the embassy or a consulate general. Chile also runs mobile consulates that travel to cities without a permanent post, which for many families is the practical route.

Additional notes

The digital credential

Chile’s single digital login for state services can be obtained in person at a consulate, with a valid identity card. It is free and it lets you handle a great deal online afterwards, which is worth an appointment on its own.

Lost passports

Posts issue either an emergency safe-conduct or a duplicate passport. Contact them immediately rather than waiting for an appointment slot.

Mobile consulates

Check the published calendar for visits to your city. They handle most routine identity and civil registry work.

One email per service

Passports, powers of attorney and civil registry each have their own address at the larger posts. Use the right one.
