Argentine Civil Records in the U.S. โ€” 2026 Guide

Checked September 2026. This page was written for this country and its details were checked against the authorityโ€™s own sources that month. Consular rules still change without notice, so confirm anything that will cost you a journey or a fee with the office that covers you. How we check our data.
Data last verified: September 2026

Argentine consulates register births, marriages and deaths that happen in their district, and the entry they create is what Argentine authorities then work from. Two practical rules dominate: jurisdiction follows the place where the event occurred, and the U.S. certificate you hand in is not returned.

If the birth happened outside your consulate’s states, your post can still receive the file and forward it by diplomatic mail to the office that actually holds jurisdiction, which adds time but saves a journey.

Files can be submitted in person or, at several posts, by mail: notarised copies are accepted for identity documents and passports, but everything else must be an original.

How to file

  1. Order the U.S. certificate of the event, and more than one copy, since the consulate keeps one.
  2. Order the Argentine parent’s birth certificate, issued within the last six months.
  3. Check whether the event happened inside your consulate’s district; if not, the file will be forwarded.
  4. Submit the documents in person or by post as the consulate allows.
  5. Wait for the consulate to verify the file and assign an appointment.
  6. Attend, sign and collect the Argentine record.

Required documents

Where to file

With the consulate covering the place where the event happened, or through your own post if it forwards files.

Additional notes

Order duplicates

Because the certificate is retained, families who will need it again for other procedures should order two or three copies at the outset.

Six-month rule

The Argentine parent’s birth certificate has to be recent. Requesting it digitally makes this easy to time correctly.

Marriages

Registering a marriage celebrated in the United States is what updates civil status in Argentina, with effects on property and succession.

Deaths

Registering a death abroad is the step that allows estates and pensions in Argentina to be settled.
