Argentine passports and identity documents are issued together through the national registry system, and consulates take the biometrics. The rule that governs the whole procedure is the address recorded on your identity document: it has to fall inside the consulate’s district, and if it does not, the change of address is processed as part of the same appointment.
Quick facts
Documents are produced in Argentina and returned to the consulate, which then either hands them over or posts them. Several posts accept postal applications for renewals from outside their district, but anything biometric has to be done in person.
Fees breakdown
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Identity document, first issue | $15 | Published tariff |
| Identity document renewal or update | Consular tariff | Confirm with your post |
| Passport | Consular tariff | Separate from the identity document |
| Registration of a birth abroad | $40 | Civil registry entry |
| Change of address | Included in the procedure | When the recorded address is outside the district |
Identity documents have compulsory updates at set ages, and an out-of-date one blocks the passport just as effectively as an expired one.
How to renew
- Check which of the consulates covers your state, since districts group many states each.
- Confirm that the address on your identity document falls inside that district, and prepare proof of your current address if it does not.
- Book the appointment through the consulate’s system.
- Attend in person for the photograph, fingerprints and signature.
- Pay the tariff in the form your post accepts.
- Collect the document at the consulate or ask for it to be posted, once it arrives from Argentina.
Required documents
- Current identity document, or, if it was lost or damaged, other Argentine documentation such as a passport, birth record or expired card.
- Proof of current address in one of the states the consulate covers.
- Previous passport for renewals.
- Payment in the accepted form.
- For minors: the age-appropriate identity document update and both parents present.
- Specific authorisation from an absent parent, legalised and translated where required, expressly covering the identity document and the passport.
Where to renew
Eight offices cover the United States between them, with wide districts. Postal service is available for some procedures; biometric ones are not among them.

Authorisations for minors
When only one parent attends, the authorisation must state expressly that it covers both the identity document and the passport. A generic letter is refused.
Age updates
The identity document has compulsory renewals at set ages in childhood. Skipping one leaves the record out of date and stops later applications.
Lost documents
Report the loss locally, keep the report and contact the consulate, which will say which replacement procedure applies to that specific document.
Collection
Consulates publish lists of documents waiting to be collected. Check before travelling to the office.
