What this office is
This is Tuvalu's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, and calling it a consulate would be wrong. It is accredited to the UN, and separately it is the Embassy of Tuvalu to the United States and to Cuba. The Mission puts it in those terms itself: "The Tuvalu Permanent Mission to the United Nations is also the Embassy of Tuvalu to USA and Cuba."
It is the only Tuvaluan office in the United States. There is no embassy in Washington, no consulate in any other city, and no honorary consulate anywhere in the country โ not even in Hawai‘i, where the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, Samoa and Tonga all keep consuls. Whatever state you are in, this office covers you.
What it does for Tuvaluan citizens
These are the services the Mission lists for Tuvaluan nationals in the United States:
- Extending the validity of a Tuvaluan passport into its second five-year term
- Registering a marriage
- Registering the birth of a child
- Legalising documents
- Visa briefings and entry requirements for travel to Tuvalu
- Information on flights to and within Tuvalu
What it cannot do: issue a new passport
The Mission lists "passport renewals" among its services, and its own passport page narrows what that means: "New Tuvalu passports are only issued from capital - Funafuti." A Tuvaluan passport runs ten years in two five-year halves, and a mission can carry you across the halfway point by extending the validity of the book you already hold. It cannot produce a new one. When the ten years are up, the replacement comes from Funafuti.
If your passport is lost rather than expired, the Mission's instruction is to telephone or email for guidance before doing anything else.
Before you go
Which states does this office cover?
All of them. It is the only Tuvaluan office in the country, so there is no jurisdiction to check and no nearer office to try.
Is the suite number right?
We publish Suite 1104, which is what the United Nations' own directory of permanent missions gives, together with the telephone on this page. The last printed UN Blue Book, of January 2023, gives Suite 1110 and a different telephone. The building is the same. Ours is the more recent of the two, but telephone before you travel.
Do I need an appointment?
The Mission publishes no appointment system, and it is a small office. Telephone or email first and say what you need. That is its own advice for a lost passport, and it is sound for anything else.
Can any of this be done by post?
The Mission does not say. Ask when you call, and ask specifically whether they will return documents by post โ there is no second office to fall back on if something goes astray.
Checked on 7 October 2026 against the Permanent Mission of Tuvalu to the United Nations and the UN Blue Book ST/PLS/SER.A/311 of January 2023. Opening hours are not published by the Mission, so this page does not state any.
