Here is the fact that decides whether your trip happens at all: a Turkmen visa normally requires a letter of invitation approved in advance by the State Migration Service in Ashgabat. Without that approval, the embassy cannot issue the visa — and the approval is not something you can arrange yourself.

For tourism, that means booking through a licensed Turkmen tour operator, who obtains the invitation and provides the guide who normally accompanies visitors. It is not a country you arrive in and explore independently.

The transit visa is the exception: valid for a few days, intended for crossing the country, and it does not require an invitation. Travellers on overland routes across Central Asia use it, and it is refused often enough that no one should build a plan around getting one.

- Choose a licensed Turkmen tour operator and agree the itinerary.
- Have them obtain the letter of invitation, allowing several weeks.
- Only once it is approved, apply to the embassy for the visa.
- For transit, apply directly and accept that refusal is common.
- Register with the migration authorities on arrival if your stay requires it.
- Read the U.S. travel advisory in full before travelling.
