Notary & Power of Attorney for Switzerland citizens in the United States — 2026

Revised October 2026, not yet country-checked. The office details below come from our directory and the apostille status was taken from the HCCH official status table, but this countryโ€™s procedure pages have not yet been through our source-by-source review. Treat what follows as the questions to ask, not as this countryโ€™s rules. Why we say so.

A power of attorney signed before a Swiss consular officer lets someone in Switzerland act for you โ€” sell a property, deal with a bank, accept an inheritance, appear in court โ€” without you flying back for a signature. It is the service that saves people the most money and the one most often prepared wrongly.

Switzerland maintains a comparatively large consular network in the United States: fourteen consular offices, in Atlanta, Brecksville, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami and six more. That is a help and a trap at once, and the trap catches more people than the distance does.

Notarial acts are performed in person, so the relevant office is the career post whose district covers your state:

A network this size is normally a small number of career consulates plus a larger number of honorary consuls. The difference matters more than the mileage: an honorary consul is usually a local resident appointed to represent the country part-time, and such posts generally cannot issue passports or visas. What they commonly do handle is certification of documents, forwarding applications, and help in an emergency.

So before travelling to whichever office is nearest, establish two things by telephone: which of the two kinds it is, and whether it performs the service you need. For a country with a network like this one, arriving at an honorary consulate for a service only a career consulate can give is the single commonest wasted journey.

The district question applies on top of that: among the career posts, the one that counts is the one covering your state, and districts are drawn by Switzerland rather than by distance.

The mistake that wastes the trip

The wording should come from the lawyer or notary in Switzerland who will actually use the document, not from a template. Civil law jurisdictions in particular refuse instruments that do not name the specific acts authorised, and a power drafted to an American pattern is frequently rejected at the other end. Ask for the text first, then book the appointment.

What to bring and what to confirm

Afterwards

Send the original by a tracked service and keep a scan. Revoking a power of attorney requires a further instrument through the same route, with notice to whoever holds the original โ€” so keep the authority as narrow as the task allows.

Office names, addresses and telephone numbers on this page come from our directory, and the count above is taken from the same records as the listing. Procedural rules come from the authority itself โ€” always confirm with the office that covers you. Apostille status checked against the HCCH official status table on 2026-10-05.
