Pakistani Passport Renewal in the U.S. โ€” 2026 Guide

Checked September 2026. This page was written for this country and its details were checked against the authorityโ€™s own sources that month. Consular rules still change without notice, so confirm anything that will cost you a journey or a fee with the office that covers you. How we check our data.

Pakistan splits its identity documents between two agencies, and knowing which one you need saves the wasted trip. The passport comes from the immigration and passports directorate through a mission, in person, with biometrics at the counter. The identity card for overseas Pakistanis comes from the registration authority and is now handled almost entirely online.

Passports come in 36, 72 and 100 pages, each in five-year and ten-year versions, so the price depends on a combination of choices rather than a single tariff.

One rule applies across the whole network and is worth knowing before you pay: consular fees are non-refundable, even if the application is rejected, withdrawn, or the document is never collected.

How to renew

  1. Book an appointment with the mission covering your state, through its own booking system.
  2. Complete the passport application form beforehand.
  3. Bring your current passport plus photocopies of every stamped page.
  4. Attend for fingerprints and photograph, which are captured at the counter.
  5. Pay by an accepted method, remembering the fee is not refundable.
  6. Collect the passport or receive it by post when notified, typically in four to eight weeks.

Required documents

Where to apply

At the embassy in Washington or the consulates general in New York, Houston, Los Angeles and Chicago, each with its own appointment system and its own fee schedule.

Additional notes

Get the identity card first

The overseas identity card underpins most other procedures, and it can be obtained without setting foot in a consulate. Sort it out before the passport where you can.

Converting an older passport

Missions handle the upgrade from the older machine-readable booklet to the electronic one, which is a full application rather than a simple exchange.

Fees vary between missions

The base fee is set centrally but each post adds its own surcharge. Confirm the exact amount with the mission serving you.

Submission hours are short

Several posts accept submissions only in the morning. Check the hours rather than assuming a full working day.
