A power of attorney signed before a Dutch consular officer lets someone in the Netherlands act for you โ sell a property, deal with a bank, accept an inheritance, appear in court โ without you flying back for a signature. It is the service that saves people the most money and the one most often prepared wrongly.
The Netherlands maintains a comparatively large consular network in the United States: sixteen offices across fifteen cities โ Atlanta, Chicago, Elyria, Honolulu, Jacksonville, Kirkwood, Miami, Minneapolis and seven more. That is a help and a trap at once, and the trap catches more people than the distance does.

Notarial acts are performed in person, so the relevant office is the career post whose district covers your state:

The difference matters more than the mileage: an honorary consul is usually a local resident appointed to represent the country part-time, and such posts generally cannot issue passports or visas. What they commonly do handle is certification of documents, forwarding applications, and help in an emergency.
So before travelling to whichever office is nearest, establish two things by telephone: which of the two kinds it is, and whether it performs the service you need. For a country with a network like this one, arriving at an honorary consulate for a service only a career consulate can give is the single commonest wasted journey.
The district question applies on top of that: among the career posts, the one that counts is the one covering your state, and districts are drawn by the Netherlands rather than by distance.
The mistake that wastes the trip
The wording should come from the lawyer or notary in the Netherlands who will actually use the document, not from a template. Civil law jurisdictions in particular refuse instruments that do not name the specific acts authorised, and a power drafted to an American pattern is frequently rejected at the other end. Ask for the text first, then book the appointment.
Acts normally available
- General and special powers of attorney.
- Sworn declarations and affidavits.
- Certification of signatures.
- Certified true copies of documents.
- Life certificates, where a pension in the Netherlands requires one.
What to bring and what to confirm
- Your valid Dutch passport or identity document.
- The text supplied from the Netherlands, already drafted.
- Full identity details of the person receiving the authority, as the records in the Netherlands spell them.
- Property or case references exactly as they appear in the register.
- Ask whether witnesses are required, and whether every signatory must attend together.
- Ask the fee and the accepted payment method, which is often not a card.
Afterwards
Send the original by a tracked service and keep a scan. Revoking a power of attorney requires a further instrument through the same route, with notice to whoever holds the original โ so keep the authority as narrow as the task allows.
Office names, addresses and telephone numbers on this page come from our directory, and the count above is taken from the same records as the listing. Procedural rules come from the authority itself โ always confirm with the office that covers you. Apostille status checked against the HCCH official status table on 2026-10-05.
