Kyrgyzstan is the easiest country in Central Asia for an American to visit: 60 days without a visa, under a regime the country extended to dozens of nationalities to attract travellers. For longer stays or other purposes there is an electronic visa valid up to 90 days — with one condition that catches people out.

Here is the condition: holders of an electronic visa must enter through Manas International Airport, Osh Airport or the Ak-Jol checkpoint on the Kazakh border. Arriving at any other land crossing with an e-visa does not work, which matters enormously on overland Central Asia routes.

Note that work and study always require a visa, whatever the length of stay and whatever your nationality’s exemption. The 60-day rule is for visits, not for taking up a job.

- For work or study, apply for the proper visa regardless of the exemption.
