Indonesia has moved its visas online, and the official consular page states it plainly: all non-official and non-diplomatic visa applications are made through the immigration department’s electronic visa portal. The consulates no longer take ordinary visitor applications at the counter.
Quick facts
Many visitors, U.S. citizens included, can obtain a visa on arrival or apply for its electronic equivalent beforehand. Which suits you depends on the length of stay and whether you want to extend once you are there.
Fees breakdown
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Visa on arrival | Published tariff | Extendable once in Indonesia |
| Electronic visit visa | Published tariff | Applied for before travel |
| Single-entry visit visa at a mission | Published tariff | Limited categories |
| Bali tourist levy | Charged on arrival in Bali | Separate from any visa |
| Stay permit | Charged in Indonesia | Immigration office |
The Bali levy catches people out: it is a provincial charge paid on arrival in Bali, entirely separate from the visa, and it is checked.
How to apply
- Decide between a visa on arrival and an electronic visa obtained beforehand.
- Apply on the official immigration portal, not through a reseller.
- Upload the passport page, photograph and proof of onward travel.
- Pay online and carry the printed approval.
- Pay the Bali levy separately if that is your destination.
- Extend or convert your stay with the immigration office in Indonesia.
Required documents
- Passport valid at least six months beyond arrival.
- Photograph to the portal’s specification.
- Return or onward ticket.
- Accommodation details.
- Evidence of funds where requested.
- Sponsor or employer documents for work and longer categories.
Where to apply
Online through the immigration portal. The missions handle official and diplomatic visas and a limited set of other categories.

Only the official portal
Numerous sites resell Indonesian visas at a markup. The government system publishes the real price and is the only issuer.
Indonesians need no visa
An Indonesian citizen travels on an Indonesian passport. For children who hold two passports, see the affidavit explained on the citizenship page.
Working needs the right permit
A visitor entry never authorises employment, and permits are arranged by the employer in Indonesia.
Overstaying is charged per day
Indonesia enforces overstay penalties on departure. Track your permitted stay from the stamp, not the visa.
