U.S. citizens do not need a visa to visit Germany for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. German consulates in the United States handle two other files: short-stay Schengen visas for third-country nationals living here, and national long-stay visas for anyone planning to study, work, join family or freelance in Germany.

Quick facts

Fee€90 Schengen, €75 national
Processing15 days short stay, months for national
AppointmentRequired, booked online
FormVidex application, printed and signed

National visa decisions usually depend on approval from the immigration office of the German city where you will live, which is why they take far longer than the consulate’s own timetable suggests.

How to apply

  1. Work out whether your stay needs a visa at all, and if so whether it is a short-stay or a national one.
  2. Apply to the mission covering your U.S. residence, and to Germany only if it is your main destination in the Schengen area.
  3. Complete the application in the official online tool, then print and sign it.
  4. Book the appointment and attend in person for fingerprints and a photograph.
  5. Submit the category-specific evidence: enrolment letter, employment contract, proof of freelance clients, or family documents.
  6. Wait for the decision, then collect the passport with the visa.

Additional notes

ETIAS

Travellers who enter without a visa will need an ETIAS authorisation once the system starts, planned for the last quarter of 2026. It is a travel authorisation, not a visa.

Americans can apply after arrival

U.S. citizens may enter visa-free and apply for a residence permit at the local immigration office in Germany. It is legal, but appointment waits in the big cities make applying from here worth considering.

The 90/180 rule

Days in any Schengen country count towards the same allowance, now tracked automatically at the border.

Documents in German

Immigration offices in Germany generally want supporting documents apostilled and translated. Preparing that before filing saves a round trip through the mail.
